Sharing Smiles for Safer Internet Day (SID) 2017
February 7th, 2017 was Safer Internet Day (SID), the day that is very important to all users of the Internet. Safer Internet Day is coordinated annually by the Insafe network and is celebrated every year across Europe, and in other countries worldwide. Digital Guru, Pt. Shiva J. Maharaj and his team at ICT Expertz Limited headed the Safer Internet Day Committee in Trinidad and Tobago for the second year (https://www.saferinternetday.org/web/trinidad-and-tobago/sid ). This year’s main theme was “Be the change: Unite for a better internet” and the sub-theme was “The power of Images”. ICT Expertz limited under their 21st-century skills training brand, Digital Guru, organised a number of online and offline events for sharing the awareness of best practices and potential dangers on the Internet. The Digital Guru himself facilitated a number of free sessions at primary and secondary schools around the country, sharing smiles to all.
To celebrate the many positives of the internet, and to raise awareness of the issues that children and young people face online today, ICT Expertz disseminated presentation materials (inclusive of presentation slides and scripts, lesson plans and follow-up activities, to teachers that they used to facilitate Internet Safety Awareness sessions with students at their school. The UK Safer Internet Centre who developed these presentations and resources are experts in the field of online safety education. The sessions provided practical advice and safety tips to help manage online safety issues, and discussions surrounding suitable behaviour online.
These materials and resources were provided for FREE. Many more schools participated in 2017 compared to 2016. However, in 2016 Safer Internet Day observations had to compete with Carnival Tuesday. The participating schools showed their support of this important and worthy initiative by sharing photos of the presentation delivery and other SID 2017 activities hosted at their institutes.
Internet safety education is a crucial element of the curriculum and an essential part of young people’s development. These sessions were designed to help them become more aware of the safety issues that they need to take cognisance of in order to manage their internet use and online reputation. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you need any further information please call the office at 692-ICTE (4283) or contact the Digital Guru directly via email: Shiva@DigitalGuru.tips to get involved in Safer Internet Day 2018. I look forward to your favourable response in this initiative as it is imperative that our Youth learn to use the Internet in a Responsible and Safe manner.
