DigitalGuru.Tips Guide for Parents

From one Caring Parent to Another

When my wife and I had our first child, owning a personal computer was considered to be a luxury. Even if you could have afforded Internet access, speeds were soo slow it was a task to even check your email. I know I just gave you a hint as to my age, however by age 4 my son was already independently using the computer and search engines.  At that age, he depended on us to access age-appropriate websites and games for him to play. One day he learnt to spell the word ‘girl’ at school. Excited that he learnt to spell a new word he innocently typed it in the search engine. One can only imagine what interesting search results were listed on the screen. Luckily, I was monitoring and quickly closed the search window. There were internet filters available, which I installed to prevent a reoccurrence. However, I taught to myself that there had to be a better way for parents to instil some values and right choices in their children when using technology and the internet. From that day on my desire to find a solution fueled my research and development for the perfect parent guide for raising kids in the digital age.

Today, we have faster processors and mobile devices. The internet is also faster and the cords have been cut, facilitating access to more documents, pictures, music and videos, anytime and anywhere. The advent of social media, apps and smart devices have also added to the complexity of parenting in a digital world. Some of the major internet dangers for children are identified in the Infographic below.
